The key difference between sugaring and waxing is the ingredients and technique. Sugaring uses an all-natural paste made from just sugar, lemon, and water, applied at body temperature and removed in the direction of hair growth. This means less breakage, less pain, and less irritation compared to traditional waxing. Waxing uses resin-based formulas applied warm and removed against the direction of hair growth using cloth strips (soft wax) or by peeling directly (hard wax). Both methods deliver smooth results lasting 3-6 weeks, but sugaring tends to be gentler on sensitive skin and causes fewer ingrown hairs. For best results with any hair removal method, your hair should be at least 1/4 inch (6mm) long — that is roughly 2-3 weeks of growth after your last shave. This length allows the sugaring paste, wax, or thread to grip the hair properly and remove it from the root. Sugaring works on slightly shorter hair (about 1/8 inch) than wax. If your hair is longer than 1/2 inch, our estheticians at Veloura can trim it to the optimal length before your treatment. We recommend avoiding shaving between appointments to maintain consistent hair growth cycles, which leads to finer and sparser regrowth over time.

Preventing ingrown hairs after sugaring, waxing, or threading requires a consistent aftercare routine. Wait 48 hours after your treatment before starting any exfoliation. After that, gently exfoliate the treated area 2-3 times per week using a soft scrub or exfoliating mitt to remove dead skin cells that can trap hair beneath the surface. Keep the area moisturized daily with a lightweight, fragrance-free lotion. Avoid tight clothing over treated areas for the first 24-48 hours. Most importantly, do not shave between appointments — shaving creates blunt hair tips more likely to curl inward. With regular treatments, hair grows back finer over time, naturally reducing ingrown hairs.
